About Dog Puzzle Reviews

Independent enrichment product reviews since 2019

Dog Puzzle Reviews was founded in 2019 with a simple mission: provide dog owners with honest, thorough, and independent reviews of puzzle toys and enrichment products. Every product on this site was purchased with our own money and tested with real dogs. We do not accept free products from manufacturers, and we never will.

Our Story

Dog Puzzle Reviews began when our founder, Megan O'Sullivan, spent an entire Saturday afternoon in a pet store trying to choose a puzzle toy for her newly adopted Border Collie, Finn. The shelves were stocked with dozens of options, each promising to stimulate, challenge, and enrich. But the packaging told her nothing useful about actual difficulty levels, durability under real chewing conditions, or whether the toy would genuinely engage an intelligent working breed. After purchasing three products that Finn either destroyed or ignored within a week, Megan decided there had to be a better way for dog owners to make informed purchasing decisions.

What started as a personal blog documenting Finn's puzzle toy experiences quickly grew into a comprehensive review platform. Other dog owners found the detailed, honest assessments refreshingly different from the promotional content that dominates the pet product space. By 2020, the site had a regular readership, and by 2021, we had expanded our testing panel from Megan's two dogs to a network of volunteer dog owners across the Portland area who contribute their dogs' time and reactions to our evaluation process.

Today, Dog Puzzle Reviews maintains a testing panel of over 30 dogs representing a wide range of breeds, sizes, ages, and temperaments. Our volunteer dogs include everything from eight-pound Chihuahuas to 120-pound Great Danes, puppies as young as four months and seniors approaching fifteen years. This diversity ensures that our reviews reflect real-world performance across the full spectrum of canine variety, not just the experience of a single dog or breed.

Our Testing Process

Transparency about our methodology is central to our credibility. Every review on Dog Puzzle Reviews follows a standardized testing protocol that we developed in consultation with Dr. Rebecca Thornton, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. The protocol ensures consistency across reviews and allows readers to compare products on a level playing field. Here is how we evaluate every product:

When a new product arrives, it is first inspected by our team for construction quality, material safety, and design. We check for sharp edges, small removable parts that could present choking hazards, material odors that might indicate chemical off-gassing, and general build quality. Products that fail this initial safety inspection are not advanced to the testing phase and receive a safety warning in any published content.

Products that pass inspection are introduced to our testing panel in controlled sessions. Each product is tested with a minimum of five dogs across at least three different breed types and two different size categories. We record first-session engagement time, solving strategy, enthusiasm level, and any signs of frustration or disinterest. Follow-up sessions are conducted over a two-week period to assess repeat engagement, durability under sustained use, and learning progression.

After the testing period, we evaluate cleaning ease using multiple methods and document our findings with specific instructions for each product. We calculate a value score based on performance metrics relative to retail price, and we assign an overall rating on our five-point scale. The completed review is then written, fact-checked, and published with full disclosure of any relevant factors that might influence reader perception.

Our Independence Commitment

Independence is non-negotiable at Dog Puzzle Reviews. We have established strict policies that protect the integrity of our reviews and ensure that our recommendations serve our readers rather than product manufacturers. We purchase every product at full retail price using our own operating funds. We never accept free products, discounted products, or advance review units from manufacturers or retailers. We do not publish sponsored content, advertorial articles, or paid reviews under any circumstances.

We do participate in affiliate programs with certain retailers, which means we may earn a small commission when readers purchase products through links on our site. These affiliate relationships are clearly disclosed on every page where they exist, and they have absolutely no influence on our reviews or ratings. Products are evaluated identically regardless of whether an affiliate relationship exists. We have published critical reviews of products from affiliate partners, and we have published glowing reviews of products with no affiliate option. The review content is always determined by product performance, never by commercial considerations.
